I had VET FEE-HELP for my course; can I apply for a VET Student Loan?

Yes, if your course code is listed on our approved VET Student Loan course list and you meet the eligibility requirements.

How do I know if my course is approved for a VET Student Loan?

Check if your course code is listed on our approved VET Student Loan course list.

The course code must be listed. If your course name is on the list but with a different course code, your course may have been replaced or it may be a new course code waiting for VSL approval. You can check Course Search to find the current course code or you can email Student Fees for assistance.

If your course has been replaced and the replacement course is eligible for a VET Student Loan you can consult an Enrolment Advisor about transferring to the new course code. Once the transfer has been completed, you will need to apply for a new VET Student Loan by submitting a new Intent to Apply for a VET Student Loan by logging into My Finances

You can also contact our Student Equity team for financial assistance, visit their page to learn more about how they can help.

How do VET Student Loan course caps work?

The course cap is the maximum amount of tuition fees you can defer for your course, at any TAFE or Private provider. If your tuition fees go over the course cap, you will need to pay the difference to Swinburne.

  • Your Statement of Account will show you if you have gone over the cap, the amount you will need to pay and when those fees will be due.

  • If you have a VET Student Loan, you can make payments to Swinburne before the census dates to pay the due amount early or if you want to reduce the amount of fees deferred to your loan.

  • If you have already used some of your course cap at another provider, you will need to give us the amount you have already used so we can calculate your remaining cap correctly.

  • VET FEE-HELP deferred amounts do not contribute to your VET Student Loan. These are two completely different loan programs. When you start a VET Student Loan, you will be allocated the full course cap.

  • If you transfer to a new version of your course, we will calculate the remaining cap for your new course.

VET Student Loans

You can apply to defer some or all of your tuition fees through the VET Student Loan program if you are enrolled in an approved VET Student Loan course and meet the eligibility criteria. You may need to contribute some of the tuition fees for your course if the fees go above the course ‘cap’.
