What is the Talking About Consent module?

Talking About Consent is designed to help students gain a core understanding of consent, supporting a safe and respectful community at Swinburne. It includes Swinburne-specific resources and student insights that ensure everyone has the knowledge to make their relationships respectful and safe, and the ability to look out for others and safely intervene.

Where can I find this module?

This module is available on Canvas for you to access and complete. Once you’ve completed the module, make sure you can see a green tick icon next to every item and quiz.

This should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Why do I have to do this module?

With recent legislative changes, universities across Australia are working to build shared expectations around key topics that shape our communities and our students' university experience.

This module helps students understand what is expected of them and highlights the importance of consent and respect during your time at Swinburne and in your future work. It gives you a clear understanding of respectful and acceptable behaviours, which will help set you up for success.

This module:

  • Demonstrates commitment to a safer community
  • Helps prevent sexual assault and sexual harassment
  • Provides tools to support others who may be affected.

We also have a video that explains the modules, their purpose, and what you need to do:

When do I have to complete this module by?

This module must be completed by the end of your first teaching period (Semester 1 or Semester 2).

What happens if I do not complete this module?

If you don’t complete this and the Academic Integrity module, you won’t be able to view your results. You will still be able to re-enrol in future teaching periods, but your results will appear a few days later.

What if I can’t complete the Talking About Consent module?

We understand that some students may not be able to complete the module for personal reasons. The Talking About Consent module covers topics including consent and sexual harm, which some students may find distressing or emotionally confronting.

We encourage you to engage with the content when you feel mentally and emotionally ready. Sitting with discomfort can be part of meaningful learning and this knowledge is essential for your safety, and the safety of others. However, if you are unable to complete the module by the deadline, please contact safercommunity@swin.edu.au before the deadline to discuss a possible exemption.
