A USI is your personal education number; it is an online record of your study in Australia. It is made up of 10 numbers and letters and stays with you for life.
Who needs a USI?
From 1 January 2023, all students (including international students in Australia) must have a USI if they are:
- Studying a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course.
- Studying a higher education course.
- Accessing Commonwealth or state financial assistance.
You must provide a valid USI when you enrol. International students must provide a USI after arriving in Australia as a USI cannot be created overseas.
Creating your USI
- Create your USI online.
- Enter your name exactly as it appears in Swinburne’s records (for international students: this will need to match your passport and your visa).
- Your personal details (name, date of birth, gender) must match your Swinburne enrolment details. If they don’t, your USI will be invalid.
Providing your USI to Swinburne
- Log in to My Swinburne
- Click 'My Tasks' tile
- In 'Provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI)' you will see the Mandatory tag against this task
- Select 'Respond' to continue with this task
- On the right-side pane, scroll down and fill in your USI in the alternate ID field
- Click on the 'Save' button
What is an invalid or missing USI?
An invalid USI means your details with Swinburne (first name, family name, date of birth) do not match the USI Registry. To fix this you can update your details on the USI Website.
If your USI is invalid or missing, a sanction will be applied to your account. This sanction will:
- Stop you from viewing your results.
- Withhold your academic transcripts.
- Prevent you from graduating.
