What is a professional internship?

Published 24/07/2015 03.22 PM   |    Updated 12/05/2026 04.30 PM

A professional internship is a unit of study involving part-time workplace experience (approx. 140 hours) related to your undergraduate degree. Professional internships offer you an opportunity to integrate 'real world learning' and gain valuable experience in the workplace with your ongoing studies.

Professional internships are typically unpaid, earn you 12.5 credit points (as an elective) towards your degree and include regular online learning activities as part of the unit.

Internships normally involve interactions with an industry partner for one or two days per week - occasionally they are undertaken intensively during the summer semester.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be in a course that has a Professional Internship as an accredited study option
  • Have completed at least 150 credit points (12 units) in your degree
  • Have a minimum credit average (60%) at the time your internship begins
  • Have an elective unit free in your study plan

Please note: If you do not have any free electives in your study plan you may add this unit as an extra unit on top of your course. International students can add this extra unit however it cannot extend your course completion date. This means you will be required to complete an additional unit over Summer or Winter Term to ensure you complete your course on time. Just keep in mind, the hours you work as part of your internship will count towards your visa's work hour limits.
